Community Oriented Policing Unit

Community Oriented Policing Services (COPs) Unit

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office COPS Unit was established in August 2013 to collaborate with community partners to address crime and quality-of-life concerns. Deputies in the unit engage daily with residents and businesses, serving as both law enforcement officers and community partners. Using community-based policing techniques, they work to detect, deter, and dismantle criminal activities while building strong relationships with the community.

Recognizing the importance of partnerships, the unit collaborates with local service providers and community organizations to enhance public safety and improve overall quality of life.

Leonardtown Community Policing

Established in 1995, the Leonardtown Community Policing "Town Watch" program was created through a federal grant in partnership with the Commissioners of Leonardtown and the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community.

A Community Police Officer, part of the COPS Unit, is assigned to Leonardtown and patrols the area using a marked patrol car and a police-equipped mountain bike. The Mountain Bike Program, launched in 1998, enhances police presence and accessibility throughout the community. The officer also leads crime prevention efforts and engages with local schools and community programs to promote public safety.
